Men’s Health Q & A
With routine wellness physicals, you can prevent common men’s health problems, such as:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Liver disease
- Flu and pneumonia
- Skin cancer
- Diabetes
- Obesity
If you’re like many men who tend to avoid getting annual physical exams, changing that way of thinking can help you avoid a host of illnesses.
What causes low testosterone?
Levels of testosterone can drop due to underlying health problems, but the most common reason is aging. Beginning at ages 30-40, your testosterone production will naturally start declining.
A condition called hypogonadism also causes low testosterone. When you have hypogonadism, your testes don’t produce the right amount of testosterone. Hypogonadism is caused by health problems, such as:
- Mumps during adolescence or adulthood
- Excessive iron in your blood
- Pituitary gland disorder
- Testicle injury
- Kidney failure
- Liver cirrhosis
- Obesity
It’s estimated that half of obese men have low levels of testosterone.
What symptoms might I develop due to low testosterone?
Men with low testosterone can have a low sex drive and experience erectile dysfunction. They can also go through physical changes, such as weight gain, breast development, loss of muscle mass and strength, and loss of bone density. You may also find that your beard or body hair starts to thin out and that you’re more likely to get depressed.
What causes erectile dysfunction?
In addition to low testosterone or hypogonadism, erectile dysfunction can develop due to underlying health problems, such as:
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Enlarged prostate
- Cardiovascular disease
- Depression and anxiety
- Chronic sleep disorder
Some prescription medications may also cause erectile dysfunction.
How are low testosterone and erectile dysfunction treated?
Dr. Ram treats low testosterone with hormone replacement therapy (HRT). This therapy can restore your hormone levels back to normal. Furthermore, HRT may also treat your erectile dysfunction.
If HRT doesn’t treat your erectile dysfunction, Dr. Ram can provide other treatments, such as oral medications, penis injections and suppositories placed in your penis.
